Character concepts.

During this week, I have started on the designs for my characters, and my aim is to turn everyday people into superheroes.

To do this, I will be using different methods to make their designs, which include using a light pad to sketch over some super heroes poses that I had printed out, to make my character designs.

Using the light pad, I placed printed out pose and placed another paper right on top to draw over it. I mad sure not to draw entirely the same thing as the reference.
In the sketch above, I was drawing y first character.

In this sketch, I was designing my fire fighter character, using a very muscular reference, to make him have a solid physic of a strong fire fighter.

I did not like how the paramedics character turned out, and I feel like I could have done a better drawing than that. To make it better, I am planning on drawing the digitally instead.

As for the fire fighter, the drawing came out exactly how I wanted it to be. I changed the pose of the character to make it look different , also preventing me from drawing the exact same thing from the reference.

For this character, I designed him digitally instead, using Clip studio.  This design is for my police officer character, and I made two designs so I could experiment with different designs.

For the first design, I made a normal casual police officer in uniform and basic equipment. While making this, I made a mistake of making the drawing on a low resolution, making the whole thing poor quality. I made sure not to make the same mistake in my next designs.

In my next design, after speaking to my tutor about my first design, I exaggerated the design and made him look more like a super-hero with a very muscular physique. In addition, I gave him a symbol on his chest
which is universal for superheroes.

This next design if for a fire fighter character. It came out perfectly just as how I wanted it, with a few adaptations from the previous police officer design.

I then chose a fire fighter colour scheme which helped him look more like a fire fighter super hero. I also added unique pattern in his suite which turned out great and unique.

This is the colour palette I used.

For my next character, I made a design for my nurse character and the sketch below, I was trying to figure out the perfect symbol for her.

I looked up different medical symbols that medical departments use in order for me to pick the perfect symbol for my superhero.

I then settled for the heart symbol because I felt it represented the role of my Superhero the best compare to the rest of them.

As I was going through the designs of the other superheroes, I ended up changing the design of the police officer because I felt like I could have done a better design, and I also kept relying on the usual police officer uniform, instead of actually giving him a superhero suite.

I really like this design better than the old one because he looks more like a superhero, instead of a gloomy guy.

Next was to designs were the true identities of the superheroes, or the casual designs for the characters.
The following design was for that of the fire fighter hero, Also know as Jack.

I liked the design of him and I felt like it suited his superhero self. When making the casual designs, I made sure to keep the same body features such as the blonde hair and the blue eyes, to make it as obvious as possible for a viewer to be able to identify them.

This design is one of my favourites  because they both came out very well and both the Super hero and the casual designs can be easily identified.

  1. These are much better and look more like you are working through ideas.... but any animator would go through a rigorous process of refining and developing a character. Its clear that you are doing the minimum once again and whilst this has meant that you have achieved pass marks over the last couple of terms, if you don't demonstrate more engagement with this project, you are going to struggle to achieve 40% as an overall mark for this module.

You should have posted Ideas into Research and Colour studies (development exercise) by the end of Week 4 as we are going into making your 2D outcomes in Week 5.

  2. You've improved this post dramatically - well done.

  3. Add a post on final character concepts - both Everyday and Hero to show how you reached a conclusion on creating your 3 (6) characters.
