Experimentation Post.

During this week's session, I experimented with different materials through a collage, and assemblage with found object, and making sure that it relates to my theme.

For the collage which was my first experiment, I first sketched one of my characters for the project that had mechanical wings and rocket powered boots.

Using a magazine, I flipped through the pages looking for a page with dark, metallic or any page that's not too bright. I then cut out the page into thin, curved strips to replicate the wings, and glued them onto the back of the sketch. In addition, I happened to find a page in the magazine that had  pieces of aluminium foil, which I used then used for the rocket powered boots I gave him.

For my next experiment involved using found materials. In order for me to stick to my steam punk theme, I used scraps of metal that are mostly black, gold, or silver in colour. I also made sure that the pieces I picked were rough shaped with no smooth edges. This is because I wanted it to represent the kind of steam punk world I'm building, where by ancient technology, mixed with industrialisation, resulted into over reliance on heavy machinery. The designs of the machines used are not slick and smooth shaped, but rough where by most parts are exposed out in the open instead of being under a cover.

Furthermore, I re-drew the character with wings with more depth and detail digitally using photoshop. I then added some more equipment such as a jetpack that would help him fly, as he uses the wings to glide.

I started off by creating a new A3 file on photoshop, and using a pencil brush, I sketched the pose I wanted, in order to display the jetpack he carries, which it's also where the wings are attached.

On a different layer, I sketched in the wings and the jetpack, making sure that I stick to the steampunk theme by making everything mechanical, hence the frame of the wings. I also made sure to give him a helmet and goggles.

Lastly, I created another layer to go over the sketches using an ink brush, which I also used to add the small bits of detail.

  1. These digital drawings look interesting - would be good to see you develop these further, follow up with a post on how you have developed these since you posted.
