Concept Research: Steam Punk/ Victorian era.

In this post I will be exploring the theme of Industrialisation that will be used in my animation project for this module.

Under industrialisation, I chose steampunk as a genre, with a mix of the Victorian era and the innovation of steam-powered machinery. This creates a world that is steam powered, old fashioned and futuristic.

I got inspiration from different movies and shows such as Mortal engines, which was a great example of heavy steam powered machines with complicated and over-exaggerated builds.

Another show that inspired me was Arcane, which was based on a video game. It inspired me because it had the perfect representation of a futuristic steam punk environment. The gadgets in this show are also very intriguing because they are very unique and come in all sorts of shapes. Take this grenade for example.  The shape is very unusual, which shows just how far imagination can go with no limits to what one can do in a steampunk world.

This inspired me to create my own weapons in my own way without using references to modern weapon in order to bring out my creativity. Here are some of the sketches I came up with.

I tried coming up with different types of weapons in my own way in a steampunk style. I loved the wat I did the pistol and rifle, where I just switched out normal parts, such as the grip, and nozzle with bulkier parts instead. I also tried experimenting with a minigun, but I did not like it because however much I tried manipulating the shapes, It couldn't work to my favour, and just kept looking modern.

When it came to character designs, I chose the Victorian era type of clothes, with shirts that have high collars. I will also be adding a steampunk twist to the clothes such as goggles or mechanical parts of the body, and with specific colours such as brown or brass.

In this drawing of one of my characters, instead of giving him goggles, I gave him a mask inspired by the plague doctor to replace them which looked so much better. It also gave him a villainous style to it which fits him, since he is the main protagonist in my story.
